Te Rā Ngahau mō te Whānau i Runga Tereina/Whānau Fun Day on the Train
This digital book was written primarily for 9-13 year olds who speak the Māori language. It was commissioned by Auckland Transport, NZ and launched at the beginning of Te Wiki o te Reo Māori (Māori Language Week), 2015.
The story is about a whānau who takes a train trip from Pukekohe to Eden Park to watch the Downer NRL Auckland Nines. Along the way they learn about a number of places in the Auckland region, their original Māori names and why they are of significance to Māori.
The book was written in te reo Māori then translated into English, so it is likely to appeal to a wider audience - young and old alike.
The book is available for free on iTunes and can be downloaded through Auckland Transport’s website. The apps functionalities include Swipe-to-Read, Tap-to-Hear and Tap-to-Spell. These help learners with pronunciation and spelling and reading and language fluency.
